Biographical Sketch:

Master degree in Chemistry in 2001; PhD in Chemical and Materials Engineering in 2008; permanent researcher at CNR-ITM since 2009. Coordinator of the H2020 FET-OPEN Project AMECRYS - Revolutionizing Downstream Processing of Monoclonal Antibodies by Continuous Template-Assisted Membrane Crystallization (www.amecrys-project.eu) (2016-2020). Awarded of the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) Global Seed Fund 2012-2013 for the project Inhibition of Nucleation Through Surface Modification. He participated in many other research projects funded by the EC, MIUR, and private companies. Winner of the European Membrane Society Award 2004 for the best scientific paper in the field of membrane engineering. He serves as scientific advisor for funding institutions such as MiUR (Italy), MOST (Israel), and European Commission. He is co-author of more than 80 papers published in scientific peer reviewed journals, 15 book chapters, a book, 1 patent, various invited lectures and ca. 150 contributions at conferences.

Main fields of research:

  • Development of membrane-assisted crystallization processes for: bioseparations and for industrial applications of crystallization;

  • Functionalized membranes development for heterogeneous nucleation of inorganic/organic materials and control of solid-state polymorphism;

  • Study of phase transitions of organic (bio)molecules for proteomics and co-crystallization of pharmaceutical ingredients;

  • Enantioselective crystallization of chiral molecules;

  • Development of membranes and membrane operations for water treatment (purification), desalination, in zero-discharge processes;

  • Energy production by environmentally sustainable process (blue energy) through salinity gradients (reverse electro-dialysis).
